Wonderment III

“Wonder is the beginning of wisdom.” – Socrates

Have you ever noticed that the wisest people around aren’t always the smartest people around? Or that the people who give the best advice don’t necessarily have the most impressive educational pedigree?

Why is that?

Wisdom is as much a matter of the heart as it is the mind. In fact, wisdom begins in the heart. The matter is quite simple: when your heart is untroubled, or put otherwise, infused with wonder, it is able to receive seeds of spiritual insight.

But that is just the beginning! Were it simply a matter of the heart, those who “follow their hearts” would find themselves in a lot less hot water than they often do. Wisdom is principally a matter of the heart, but the mind plays an important role in its manifestation.

More on that tomorrow…

This is the time of year when the realizations of the seeds of potential endeavors that can bring greater and greater fulfillment are at their height. It is a vital time to keep our hearts clear and untroubled better yet as you say infused with wonder to be able to realize those seeds of wonderful possibilities.

Freeing the heat of trouble takes a conscious even dutiful effort. I believe it is an area that puts our free will to the test. I have found that it has to matter to us and that a great amount of effort may be required, at times, to make sure we don’t let our hearts become constricted. The easiest way, that I’ve experienced, is to not let myself become persuaded into judgement. Judgement always compromises the availability of the heart. I think the heart is much like a tuning fork; it becomes entrained with the rhythms we entertain.
