A Worthy Friend

“Friendship is the allay of our sorrows, the ease of our passions, the discharge of our oppressions, the sanctuary of our calamities, the councellor of our doubts, the clarity of our minds, the emission of our thoughts, the exercise and improvement of what we meditate. And although I love my friend because he is worthy, yet he is not worthy if he can do no good.” – Jeremy Taylor, “A Discourse on Friendship”.

To be a worthy friend you must be:

  • fit to be loved
  • an excellent person in your own right, and
  • at peace with your own company first.

Some of my dearest friends were discoveries I made when serving a common purpose. I guess the friendship developed as the worthiness of our endeavor developed. It’s not a subject I’ve given particular thought to. I guess I’ve found on the friend spectrum if I wanted a friend I just had to be one first.
