One of my chief responsibilities in my role as CEO is to do all that I can to inspire those working with me to serve in a spirit of joy. In my book, work should not be drudgery. If it is, you’ve let yourself and those around you down.
Creative, fulfilling living requires both work and leisure, effort and relaxation. It is the oscillation between the two that allows the vivifying current of life to flow through us and out into the contact points in our worlds. Vibrant, joyful living begets a life worth living.

It is certainly a challenge as a CEO to inspire joy in the workplace when drudgery, lethargy and mediocrity are very much the norm. Joy is certainly not something you can inforce or really even sucessfully fake, because both (the reality and the lie) have such a distinctive tone, though few in the world are attuned to which is which. The only thing I have found to be remotely successful it to be the living example, to me joy comes from those moments of true communion, when shared both parties are aware of that creative spark and something magical happens. Thank you for this opportunity to commune in joy.

Providing living proof is helpful and I agree, joy is not a forced or arbitrary state of being. It comes only as there is a deep relaxation into the field of responsibility you carry, however it happens to be configured from moment to moment.

You do inspire others to live vibrantly. Your consistency to do so in this area often fills a vacuum that is created by those who oppose this principle, mainly by habit. Thanks for putting ample pressure on the joy “suckers” of the world and setting the example that is so desperately needed. A great reminder for any leader as to their most important role!

Why thank you! I have no concern for the “joy suckers” as you call them, but they do, I suppose, have a choice to make when they encounter joy, whatever it’s provenance. Each charts his own course!

Balance between the two is preferable. When I’m clear that I’m “on purpose” it can look to others like there may be too much of one but the pure joy that I feel is all the proof I need. I don’t believe joy is reserved for weekends, vacations or exclusive to “me time”. I think it’s supposed to be an aspect of our nature like appreciation and empathy. It happens for me when I’m engaged with mind and heart in my activities . Beautiful post, thank you.

There are no special requirements or ideal conditions in circumstance necessary for joy to be expressed. joy is always an option.

Being able to accurately see where you should be in that oscillation is one of the keys to living life successfully. When you start to hold on to one side too long, whether work or leisure, things start to get stale and overstressed. Constant renewal is necessary.
