Human Progress

The most difficult subjects can be explained to the most slow-witted man if he has not formed any idea of them already; but the simplest thing cannot be made clear to the most intelligent man if he is firmly persuaded that he knows already, without a shadow of doubt, what is laid before him.” – Leo Tolstoy

It is rarely advisable to skip the main course and go straight to dessert, but in the case of food for the soul, its best to pass on the chicken soup and proceed directly to the humble pie. Arrogance, not ignorance, is the greatest impediment to human progress.

We never can see all of the facets of a situation, so it is always unwise to act like you can. Being open to change is a vital part of being a successful person.

It is good to observe what we experience when something may be presented to us. If there is an awareness of being upset or conflicted your humble pie analogy may be very useful.

That is so well put. With heightened mental ability comes increased ability to filter, skew, distort and deceive, and ultimately the deceiver is the one most thoroughly deceived. Thanks to you and Leo for this timely word!

Wow, this has certainly been true in my experience Gregg. It is rather horrifying and definately humbling to look back and see the level of one’s own arrogance. My daily prayer is that all levels of arrogance abate in the fire of repentance. Your blog offers wonderful opportunity for this Gregg, thank you!

When we examine history, including our own, the saddest words are, “if only I’d known”. I believe in most cases we could have known but were blinded by arrogance. Humility is usually the eye AND heart opener.
