A Provocative Thought

I imagine it would be a little upsetting to realize that you are the most upsetting person in your life. But it’s true! Consider this 2,000 year old, simple thought:

It is not he who gives abuse that affronts, but the view that we take of it as insulting; so that when one provokes you it is your own opinion which is provoking.” – Epictetus

We react to others because of our fundamental insecurities. Those that are secure in themselves have the strength and wisdom to realize what is behind another’s affront, which is usually their own insecurities.

This is a liberating quote! And it leaves no doubt who is responsible for each of our own individual feelings does it!

Just where has this understanding gone? Something so ancient, which you’d figure would be as commonly known today as in our general understanding of say, dinosaurs, is obscure and given little, if any, importance. What a refreshing perspective this is – simple in its truth yet completely powerful in its transformative potential when effectively lived out.

What a marvelous quote. It’s said that no one can make us feel inferior without our permission. It seems we can not get away from the fact that our own inclination to judge is what creates most of our problems. Thanks for such a liberating post!
