The Development of the Heart

Of all the things you can do to truly get ahead in life, none is more valuable than the development of your heart. I imagine that you, like me, spent a great deal of time refining your mental faculties in school, but what of your heart’s capacity for compassion?

Anger and hatred can consume you in a heartbeat if you’re not careful. Instead of reacting, seek instead to craft a compassionate response to the slings and arrows of your enemies.

All suffering is caused by ignorance. People inflict pain on others in the selfish pursuit of their own happiness or satisfaction.” – Dalai Lama XIV

I think most people realize early on in their development that life can be painful. I believe we try to mitigate our own exposure to it and in the process constrict the very capacity that was designed to bring our only real peace and comfort. Like a muscle we can regain the use of this capacity through some effort and focus . Thankfulness is a wonderful beginning. The habit of appreciation and not allowing fault finding to have a voice. Holding yourself to high standards first. The spirits that reside in our hearts determine our happiness and peace; we, in fact, need look no further.
