Each and every jot and tittle of life is richly detailed, but it’s easy to miss the lovely subtle essences if you’re not careful.
I’ve made it a point when I’m with my children to point to the hidden treasure trove of detail in any and everything. One of the best ways I’ve found to do this is to look at every moment as an opportunity to explore that detail together.
For instance, I prepare for the drive to school by researching different styles or periods of music and then playing them on the ride. I slip in a few facts I think they might find interesting while the music is playing in the background and these seeds invariably sprout into an interesting and generative conversation. I look to do the same with word etymology, cultural observations, historical references, food choices and just about anything else we might encounter in the course of a regular day.
In my book there is absolutely no reason for boredom or mind-numbing repetition. Even if you’re doing the same thing over and over again you can study its intricacies. If you don’t take this approach to living, you’ll likely find experience of life becoming more and more tightly focused over time, to the point of narrow-mindedness.
And that, my friends, is not living, but just getting by. You deserve more than that, but you must take steps to experience it.

I too treasure exploring the details of life with my children…I find it amazing at times what a 4 year old can “see”, and then remember. They are walking in our footsteps so it is wise to give thought to the example we set.

Your morning drive sounds fun. When I take the time to look at my surroundings there’s always something I’d previously missed. I believe that about every situation. Appreciation also adds to our perceptiveness. It creates a special lens with which we view our life!

This is the only way to live. There are so many things to learn in this life, that we can’t even hope to skim the surface of them all let alone master them. It is an unfortunate habit to think that we are bored or have nothing to do. We should see that as an indicator that our imagination is lacking, and we need to do something about it.
