Life by Henry van Dyke
Let me but live my life from year to year,
With forward face and unreluctant soul;
Not hurrying to, nor turning from the goal;
Not mourning for the things that disappear
In the dim past, nor holding back in fear
From what the future veils; but with a whole
And happy heart, that pays its toll
To Youth and Age, and travels on with cheer.
So let the way wind up the hill or down,
O’er rough or smooth, the journey will be joy:
Still seeking what I sought when but a boy,
New friendship, high adventure, and a crown,
My heart will keep the courage of the quest,
And hope the road’s last turn will be the best.
If I’ve learned anything in my 41 years of living it is that life goes on. There will be ups and downs no matter who you are or where you live, so developing the ability to maintain a forward face no matter how uncomfortable life becomes is a must.
Your soul is eternally unreluctant. Knowing this, you needn’t screw up your courage to meet the challenges of your life, instead, you simply have to learn to let – yes LET! – your unreluctant soul rule your mind and heart. If you’ve been hesitant to face the harder things before you, you’re probably feeling this way because you’re trying to deal with the issue without the might of your soul.
You of your own self can do nothing, but you in agreement with your soul can do just about anything.
This is such a profound statement. It cuts the Gordian Knot that all the psychobabble in the world will never really be able to get at.
When it comes down to it, not one of us will ever be successful in life if we don’t really want to be. We can pretend like we are trying our hardest and that we “have all the bad luck”, but we are really just self-sabotaging because we are not letting the might of our soul shine through into our day to day life.
While there are myriad details that must be seen to and finessed to live a life that is always onwards and upwards, the might of the soul makes possible many things.

Thank you for providing the key to forward movement and a life of victory. Our unreluctant soul’s are mighty and sure. It is great to open to the reality of this in the face of our living now.

Holy smoke, that’s it! Where the heck does that drive to tackle come from? It’s from the deep well of the soul where we can draw the strength to keep clearing the way before us. It’s what life always does, so naturally, in so many ways, it always finds a way – always. Life as we know it could not exist if it weren’t for finding a way. Challenges are always overcome and though we have the ability to influence things on a much larger scale than some of our other companions on this planet, this basic propulsive force is nonetheless active within – always. But, yep, it’s gotta be let loose. Something about relaxing into your soul comes to mind…. 🙂
Thx for a great morning’s spark!

Great poem and wise approach. Anything less and we settle for, well, less! We are eternal and should act that way.
