The True Meaning of Life

The true meaning of life is to imbue your life with meaning.

Your life, despite your genetic inheritance, your socioeconomic endowment and the dumb or bad luck you’ve had over the years, did not come prepackaged like a cake mix to which the waters of time are added. That which you have – your genes, life experiences and material possessions – are simply the contact points through which you can express meaning and add value.

Every single decision you make and action you take adds to one side or the other of the balance of your life. You either add meaning and value or tip the scales toward frustration and futility depending on how you handle that which comes your way. The moment you complain about the contact points you have you tip the scales away from happiness and fulfillment.

Who are you to judge, really, which contact points are important and which are not? Is your vision really so vast, accurate and free of distortion that you feel safe to pick and choose? Why not fill every single contact point to overflowing with meaning and value, without prejudice? What do you have to lose (apart from your judge’s gavel) in so doing?

The true meaning of life is much simpler than you might imagine.

Some time ago, you had us reader write down our personal purpose, which now seems appropriate to share…
“To accept full responsibility for the privilege of being present, leaving EVERYTHING uplifted”
We are either Creating or Destroying. There is no inbetween.
    Thanks Gregg!

Thank you for illustrating this so simply. It certainly takes the pressure off – to not feel the need to judge, but instead to seek to add value, thereby living a life that is of value.

Beautifully said. I’ve not thought of some of those things as contact points but I see your point. Complaint can be subtle too, such as irritation or annoyance. Wonderful post, thanks so much!

There is nothing wrong with being nervous that if you play the judge, jury, and executioner, you might choose wrong and screw some part of your life up irrevocably. Because of the inability to see into others’ hearts, there is a high probability that you will not be an accurate judge! So drop the gavel, and make your only concern be that you handle accurately and add meaning and value to every moment that passes you by.

I’ve been having an ongoing dialogue with myself over the past few days about this exact topic– the meaning of life. I had this realization that was one of those realizations when you truly understand something you had previously thought you”knew”. I may have heard it a thousand times and possibly said it to others, but what I realized is this: life is not about getting from point A to point B. What I truly came to grasp is that it is, in fact, about everything else except finally arriving at point B. It’s about the traveling process- and what you make of every contact point along the way. Thanks for touching on this. It truly hit home!

It’s true – might as well make the best of every situation you have; what else can you do that has greater meaning? It’s really the only chance you have to change anything for the better.
There’s a natural drive to thrive in life; ignorance of this fact taken by stubborn attitudes just puts us and others in harm’s way, going way off the track of discovering true meaning in life.
