Higher Vision

One of the challenges I most enjoy as a manager is the need to inspire others to see that the quotidian need not be mundane.

Circumstances are not inherently boring, tedious or commonplace. Those names are given to them by people who encounter them in the garden of life. Two people might view the same situation entirely differently. One might see the task at hand as boring and banal, while another might take great pleasure in following the same task through to completion. The perceived value of circumstances is more often ascribed than inherent.

I contend that every single moment you have the privilege of living through is significant. The daily apathy, disinterest and disdain held in relation to the little things in life by the average man destroy far more precious moments than the combined efforts of every villain that has ever lived.

There is much more texture to living than we tend to recognize or acknowledge. It is easy to slip into a “ho-hum” approach to living, where life is seen as a drudgery, where the familiar is treated with contempt and where the little things are not seen in their relationship to the large. But why live your life as a dead battery that requires a jump-start every time it is used? Living this way is painful, difficult and dreadfully monotonous, no matter how good you may have it.

To live, to truly live, you must infuse your living with the life that is in you. It may feel arbitrary or contrived at first – especially if you’ve been out of the habit for some time – but you soon remember how wonderful it is to have life coursing through your veins, catalytic thoughts moving through your mind and revitalizing feelings moving through your heart.

You need not wait for the “perfect” circumstances, for each and every moment contains within it the seeds of perfection. Seek them, find them, tend to them and you will begin to see how magical every single moment of your life can be. It won’t matter if you’re engaged in the little things or the large, for when you look at your world with higher vision, you begin to see the hidden significance in the most mundane of your affairs.

I find that if I look through history, you see these resounding success stories of people who make the right decision at the right time and saved the day. But if you look into the story behind the rest of their lives (other than the big moments), you see that they generally cared enough about the little moments to make the right choices there too. The day-to-day can be majestic, if you approach it correctly. I think a good place to approach beginning to live this way is to realize that you should take the same care of the details in the seemingly unimportant things as you do in the things that you know are important. For one thing, humans are not the best judges and you never know what might turn out to actually be important. If you are always prepared, you never have to get prepared.

I would say the best, the actual BEST, moments of our lives are the ones where we’ve done something to raise a given condition, either in someone or some event or circumstance. This would include the little tasks as well, not just the more dramatic moments we all have. For starters, you’ve actually contributed something positive in some way and in return, it gives you the sense of having earned what comes to you in life which furthermore protects you from the damaging sense of entitlement that afflicts many and is the cause of much impotence in the world.
It does take a wider lens in your vision to see really just how meaningful are all the moments of our lives. Together, they sure can reveal a very powerful influence.

  3. Thanks for your simple and life giving words. Your words are a beacon for all to hear how inherent life is within all of us and at the same time needing to be ascribed as you say on all of our circumstances. I remember a mentor of mine who I had observed just walking with an expression of genuine joy. That impression has been brought to mind by your words. With a sense of genuine joy I agree with you and appreciate the reminder how my life can be magical moment by moment.

I think our individual lives carry so much power in the order of things. The promise of each life to enrich and infuse the present is like a drop of ink in a glass of water or a homeopathic in the body. I look around and see the examples where one life has made such an enormous difference. I believe there are as many or maybe more that we’ll never learn their story but their contribution was significant. If we are alive the opportunity is still available. It takes courage and sometimes inspiration from another. Thanks Gregg, onward and upward!!

I totally agree. Even if you think you are “doing the same thing” every day, you really aren’t. It’s just your attitude about it that’s the same. If we are excited and anticipating each new day, our eyes will be open to new possibilities. Children are a great example. They may have set schedules, nap times, meal times, classes and similar aspects to their day, but no two days are ever the same.

I loved the way you said this. In many instances our culture has contributed to this. We live from vacation to vacation sometimes it’s as if all we do in between is work only to earn the next one. Advertising has assisted in this but again we have the choice. We should love the adventures of our vacations without detracting from the adventure of day to day living. I think those that enjoy a robust every day are in position to let thieir adventures go beyond what “mad men” can dream up!
