You Are What You Plant

“Don’t judge each day by the harvest you reap but by the seeds that you plant.” ~ Robert Louis Stevenson

The measure of a man is established in the quality of his sowing. Great men make exceptional use of anything that comes their way while men who have not yet discovered their greatness are productive during the good times and filled with despair during the bad.

Circumstances come in many shapes and sizes and to judge circumstances is to ensure a life of discouragement, mood swings and unnecessary suffering. The world we live in now is generated by the sum total of decisions and actions taken in the past. Given that mankind continues to seed the future by judging his circumstances, himself and others (despite a clear injunction not to), it is likely that you will face harvests thin on opportunity and thick with complicating factors. My advice: man up, get used to it and get over it!

I wonder how different Congressional deliberations, boardroom discussions and chats by the water cooler would be were everyone involved to eschew the tendency to judge, blame and complain. Imagine the space that would open up for constructive thinking, creative brainstorming and cooperative action!

Give me a world with no finger pointing, no judgment and no complaint and I will give you a future worthy of celebration.

That world sounds awesome. Complaint, judgment and criticism take up valuable air space that could be used for appreciation, support and creativity.

As we understand the implication of our daily planting, attitudes, thoughts and deeds are given the weight they deserve. We own them and live the results of them.
    Love the quote.

Thanks for planting this simple seed of truth, and providing an excellent starting point for today! Here we have the leverage and ability to change, “man up” sounds alot like a saying I could get used to celebrating, rather than the so well known……”Man down”. I am with you 100%, the overcoming of this destructive tendency “We” have allowed to persist, is not only available but within reach starting today, right where I’m sitting.
    Thanks again Gregg,
    Your perspective brings peace….as always!

Great post! and timely for the start of a new year.
It has been my experience that the more effectively I plan, plant, and nurture, the greater the crop come harvest time. If I sit and simply watch things grow in anticipation to see what I’m going to “get”, I am often dissappointed.
My feeling is that Robert Louis Stevenson is eluding to the ultimate life of service
