Good People

It is wonderful how much time good people spend fighting the devil. If they would only expend the same amount of energy loving their fellow men, the devil would die in his own tracks of ennui.” ~ Helen Keller

What would a day look like were you to expend the entirety of your energies loving your fellow men?

To do so would require that you eschew any effort in the direction of struggling with the devils and demons in your world while simultaneously focusing your full attention not on the nature of that around you, but on the goal of radiant expression.

What would it look like? Could you make it an entire day without cursing yourself, your circumstances or another? How would it feel?

Give it a try today. Dare to rise above the fray. Let those toward whom and those matters toward which you would normally deal with your inattention, not that they might suffer, but that the struggle in you might come to an end.

I dare you!

Yeah, this encapsulates the ‘lightness of being’…..so much weight occurs as a result of struggle, so much precious energy simply wasted, gone forever and what could have been done today constructively, never sees the light of the day. To love is to be free in yourself and thus you free others; to wish the best for your fellow man, to desire deeply that their struggles too are lifted, simply because as you feel their hurt you feel the weight which was perhaps once your own or if not then as if it were your own – both which need not be. We were meant to be free, all of us, together. You love and that’s it, no more discussion needed.

This post comes to mind as I see daily, the smiles on the faces of the children around me dealing with cancer. There is amidst the illness, pain and struggle, a sense of joy and appreciation for what “is”, more so than you see resentment and anger. They do not choose to go to war with the demons or to curse God, for their life means more than to delve into that darkness. Helen Keller also lived a life that mattered, a life of great significance in spite of her circumstances and found the ‘joi de vivre” in all that she had access to. She was a living example for all of us, as are the brave children that I am priveledged to be around during this time in my life. That dare is worth taking Gregg, let the light shine in the darkness and appreciate what is right!

The wellspring of love so easily displaces the voids of fear, resentment, discontent and self-concern. The power at the core of each individual is so much more than most would imagine. Why not use every circumstance, good or ill as it may appear, to motivate a return to that ever-present core? Love holds no grudge, demands no retribution, is never less than it is. Looking for a sure thing in an uncertain world? Accept the dare!

Taking into consideration all of Helen Keller’s physical limitations, she would have been a prime candidate for fear and resentment, and yet the radiant mind and heart of an imprisoned soul was anything but in prison. She knew life was a precious gift and was able to live far beyond the day to day struggle of just surviving. She was neither taken by the devils in herself, nor was she so in awe of the devils in others that she would give them any more power than it deserved. The ability to love others and love oneself is our greatest power, squandered by most people comparing their lives to others in resentment, or just feeling unprotected or alone which would grip them in fear. You are right Gregg, there is so much more to our lives than conquering the devils and demons in our worlds. Loving and enjoying our worlds for instance, and especially loving each other! Thank you for the dare, to live and let the joi de vivre be felt. For it is probably the joy of living that the devils and demons can stand least of all! I think this is what Ms. Keller was so articulate in illuminating.
