The Decision to Act

The most difficult thing is the decision to act, the rest is merely tenacity. The fears are paper tigers. You can do anything you decide to do. You can act to change and control your life; and the procedure, the process is its own reward.” ~ Amelia Earhart

What, if anything, do you fear? Change? Loss? Discomfort? Challenge? Not fitting in? Standing out? The unknown? If you’ve ever overcome a fear that you once held, you know that at a certain point you pushed right on through, despite the fact that the thing you feared looked like a tiger, smelled like a tiger and probably roared like a tiger.

Fear is the fundamental cause of mediocrity. Its counterpart, greed, is the cause of all atrocity. The remarkable thing about fear is that it has no life apart from that which you give it each and every time you fail to act when you likely know at some level that you should.

Boldness in the hour of action is the antidote to fear.

We gain strength, and courage, and confidence by each experience in which we really stop to look fear in the face… we must do that which we think we cannot.” ~ Eleanor Roosevelt

It’s not that you don’t feel fear. It’s that you take its measure and drive on anyways. In fact, the ability to move despite fear is one of our best survival mechanisms. I really like the Earhart quote!

Your identifying fear as the fundamental cause if mediocrity is so true! Clearly there is no better way to maintain the current status, and people tend to want to do this no matter how uncomfortable it is, don’t they? I love this post – it contains the key to accomplishing ANYTHING in life.

Great post! I heard someone describe it well recently that we each are the director of the movie of our mind, so we can yell “CUT” any time we want. Sounds like a good plan any time fear comes into the picture!
