The whole point of being a loving person is not to secure a result, but to be who you are at the very core of your being. I am convinced, despite mountains of evidence to the contrary, that you, and every other person on earth, are fundamentally good. Whether your actions give evidence of that inner goodness is up to you, and your expression is the only thing that you will always have control over in your life.
Purpose
You were born, I was born, to give evidence of that inner reality. You may not have had a perfect upbringing, you might have made many mistakes along the way, but the truth is that the wonderful center of you can be muted, but it can never be destroyed.
Radiance
The world as we know it is full of the wreckage of poor human judgment. There is no way to fully insulate yourself from it and despite the claims of common wisdom, it is a radiant presence, not a thick skin, that protects you from the insults of others and the slings and arrows of misfortune.
Devotion
Finally, your value lies not in what you are able to achieve in the living of life, rather, it is established by the constancy of your devotion to the expression of love. Love is forgiving. Love is commanding. Love intensifies all things. One who truly loves does not need the perfect configuration of circumstance to express love, in fact, every circumstance – no matter how limited it may be – contains the aperture through which love can be made known.
Disparage not the world around you. Don’t be dismayed when the love you give is neither received nor reciprocated. Take heart: love springs from an inexhaustible source and at the end of the day, fulfillment is love’s wages.
