Fluidity of Being

“For Equilibrium”, To Bless the Space Between Us: A Book of Blessings by John O’Donohue

Like the joy of the sea coming home to shore,
May the relief of laughter rinse through your soul.
As the wind loves to call things to dance,
May your gravity by lightened by grace.
Like the dignity of moonlight restoring the earth,
May your thoughts incline with reverence and respect.
As water takes whatever shape it is in,
So free may you be about who you become.
As silence smiles on the other side of what’s said,
May your sense of irony bring perspective.
As time remains free of all that it frames,
May your mind stay clear of all it names.
May your prayer of listening deepen enough
to hear in the depths the laughter of god.

There is a mystical wonder to living and if you are not careful you can end up living your life in complete ignorance of it. That wonder is not unlocked by studying harder, by applying yourself in a more focused way, or by praying that it will happen; it comes only as you open your heart sufficiently to receive it into yourself.

An open heart is a supple heart. It is made so primarily by virtue of the spirit of appreciation. Every time you give thanks, even if it is simply for the miracle of life, your heart is softened. This can be done by anyone, any time, anywhere.

Hardened hearts become so not because of loss, hurt, or indignity, but because of the refusal to acknowledge the miracle of life, the steadfastness of truth and the majesty of love. Nature does not hold a grudge. The beauty of nature is its fluidity of being.

A jaded heart is imprisoned by judgement, hate, cynicism, resentment, etc. Tragically, these spirits make the key to freedom from self-imposed jail impossible to find. It’s only as we are willing to see the beauty in life and others and forgive, that the shackles melt from us.

The hardened heart finds it difficult to release, to repent, to open in gratefulness for the privilege of living. Why? What is it that cements such loyalty to those things which imprison and waste? Spirits of resentment and discouragement find rapid agreement, it would seem, while to walk the path of thanksgiving seems, at least initially, like a solitary thing. Yet that sense of aloneness is the Needle’s Eye, through which any may pass into a place where the Essence of oneness restores and heals.

Deliberately opening my heart with thankfulness is like amending my garden soil before planting. I think it nourishes and then helps to sustain the creation that will be born when my heart is made available to our Creator. The fluidity of being is an apt description of what is available to us when we make the decision that thankfulness , above all else, is supreme to us. Wonderful post. Thank you.
